Antique Cast Iron Fireback, Coat of Arms of Charles I, Circa 1900

About the Item

This antique cast iron fireback features the coat of arms of Charles I, King of England, Ireland, and Scotland from 1625-1649. It has recently been cleaned and lightly clear waxed to accentuate the motifs and provide a rich and even patina. The rectangular fireback has an arched top and thick molding along all edges except the bottom. Beneath the arch is a closed crown topped with a cross patée. The crown is flanked by two sets of numbers: “16” and “35”, indicating that the original fireback was probably cast in the early 17th century. Beneath the crown is an eared-top French base shield known as “English style”. The escutcheon is quartered and charged with faded elements, although you can still make out some of the emblazons, such as a patriarchal crosses, chevrons reversed, and a quadruped animal. A crinkled ribbon surrounds the shield as two animal supporters and a pair of letters flank the heraldry. To the left of the shield is a “C” over the shoulder of a crowned rampant lion, which represents strength and nobility. On the right-hand side is an “R” with a rampant unicorn fitted with a broken chain, signifying freedom. Firebacks can date all the way back to the 15th century and were designed to radiate heat from wood-burning fires. Cast iron is very hearty and the firebacks would also protect the back wall of the fireplace. They can still be used in this fashion, but you may also see them used as a stove backsplash or simply as a decorative wall hanging.
