All handcrafted and rare, brass firewood bucket by A. Arens of Antwerp, depicting the alchemist. Only if you were a very wealthy person in Europe in the late 1800s, would you be able to afford this large, impressive and all-handcrafted, chest-like firewood bucket. This large size, stunning and work of art antique would have graced the interior of a mansion where it would have kept the firewood logs. Where in this day and age can you still purchase a 'bucket' for firewood that is made to last and that could ever stand the test of time like this almost 150 year old antique has. Besides incredibly well made and truly artistic this deeply embossed, brass firewood chest with its amazing patina also tells a Medieval story. In the front it is that of alchemy and the alchemist. Here several are at work trying to find answers (like humans always have) in a Medieval 'laboratory'. By the fire and at their table, with pots pans and mortars pestles and the 'books of knowledge' around them. On the sides and on top of this chest are many more ancient symbols with a deeper meaning and besides the quality of the workmanship this one of a kind antique could hardly be in better condition. Since this sizeable and impressive antique also is incredibly clean on the inside, in this day and age it could also be used for all kinds of other, storage purposes. Both handles are as strong and mint as the day they were handforged and thanks to the original and perfect chain this extremely luxurious home accessory also is safe to open and close as well. Finally, the superb antique, wooden and brass casters underneath are like the perfect finishing touch to this unique antique. The Belgian metalworker A. Arens proudly (and rightly so) 'signed' his name on the lid, just below the head of the green man symbol. Anyone who is capable of creating such amazing and meaningful artwork should have had a long and prosperous career. However, since hardly any of this Belgian artisan's work can be found anywhere, we believe he may not have lived very long (which was not uncommon in the late 1800s). Besides very attractive and decorative, this is one of the largest and most luxuriously detailed antique buckets that we ever had the pleasure of offering.
