About the Item

A Fine 19th-Century French Ormolu Fireside Stick Stand, Circa 1870 Of superb quality and arresting presence, this elegant gilt-bronze stick stand epitomises the refined taste of the French late-Napoleonic and Second Empire periods. Finely cast in ormolu (gilt bronze), the stand is designed with classical symmetry and exquisite sculptural detail, centred by a finely modelled mask of Medusa beneath an urn finial and elaborate acanthus scrolls. The twin circular holders extend gracefully from either side, balanced on an openwork frame of sinuous uprights enriched with foliate ornamentation and terminating in a shaped, pierced base with elegant scroll feet and a removable drip tray. The casting throughout is crisp and of the highest standard, displaying the finesse of Parisian foundry work of the mid to late nineteenth century. Retaining an attractive, gently mellowed gilded surface with soft patination consistent with age, this piece conveys the sophistication and artistry characteristic of French decorative metalwork of the period. Equally at home in a grand entrance hall or beside a fine marble fireplace, it serves both as a practical stand for canes, umbrellas, or fireside tools, and as a decorative statement of neoclassical elegance. Dealer’s Note Ormolu stands of this calibre are increasingly scarce; the present example, with its harmonious proportions and refined casting, exemplifies the height of French decorative metalwork during the Second Empire. Comparable examples can be found in the collections of leading Parisian bronziers such as Barbedienne and Maison Baguès, whose works combined neoclassical motifs with functional luxury. Condition Report Recently cleaned and presented in very good condition. The gilt-bronze surface displays a warm, even tone with gentle patination consistent with age. All elements are original and secure; no losses or structural issues. Minor surface wear commensurate with careful use, enhancing the piece’s authentic antique character.
