A Fine 19th Century Rococo Revival Brass Fireside Stick Stand or Cane Stand
An elegant and decorative brass stand, designed for canes or fireside sticks, dating to the mid-to-late 19th century. This beautifully cast piece reflects the Rococo Revival style, fashionable in Britain and France during the Victorian period.
The stand features a twisting spiral column, rising from a bold and heavily ornamented base. At the top is an ornate scrolling foliate handle, finely cast with acanthus detail, giving both decorative flourish and practical utility. Two circular holders extend from the central shaft, providing support for sticks, canes, or fire-side implements.
The base is of shaped cartouche form, richly embellished with scrolling foliage, rocaille work, and a finely detailed classical urn overflowing with stylised leaves. The textured ground enhances the three-dimensional quality of the casting, while the natural wear to the gilded brass surface has created a warm, mellow patina.
This stand is a refined example of decorative yet practical Victorian metalwork. The Rococo Revival, with its playful and asymmetrical designs, was a celebration of artistry in everyday domestic objects, elevating even utilitarian items into works of sculptural beauty.
