About the Item
Early 19th century Georgian Fireside ‘downhearth’ skillet in brass, copper and wrought Iron. The skillet has a brass bowl attached to a long wrought iron handle raised on a foot terminating in a shaped end with a hole for hanging. The heavy gauge brass pan is fixed to a wrought iron ring with dome-headed copper rivets, the handle raised on a stand to help it rest of the hearth.
Traditionally used for cooking over an open fire, the skillet was simply pushed into the hearth to sit among the flames while the contents were cooking. Today these attractive copper skillets have become a decorative item, something people enjoy seeing around a fireplace, along with polished warming pans, copper kettles and toasting forks. This item is in original, unpolished period condition.
