About the Item

A magnificent bronze fireplace fender, intricately detailed, from 19th century France, in the Neoclassical style. This fender features a number of classical motifs, including scrolling foliate swags, cherubs and panthers. The base is decorated with alternating floral decorations and face masks. Each end of the fender culminates in a large Neoclassical style plinth, topped with a feather, on which sits one cherub. This piece is beautifully cast and the workmanship is of wonderful quality. Even the back of the fender features decoration. The position of the cherubs' hands indicates they may have held sheaf of wheat. With a beautiful, weathered patina that shows signs of oxidation and verdigris, which only adds to its charm.
