About the Item
A large 19th century British Swaledale marble fireplace surround in soft mushroom tones with many different types of fossils, a substantially deep shelf sits above an unadorned frieze, flanked by wide stepped jambs displaying geometric corbels with splayed capping, all resting on splayed foot blocks.
Fire opening size: 965mm high x 985mm wide (width is adjustable in or out in size with a max width of 1005mm)

Swaledale marble:
There are few luxuries one can have in their life that is more exquisite or exclusive than British marble. This crinoidal marble is a true rock of ages- over 350 million years old. Its story dramatically reflected by the stunning and large fossils that emerge as a result of polishing. It was quarried in North Yorkshire, England and used in Durham Cathedral (13th Century) and for pavements for York Minster (15th Century). It then went out of vogue, perhaps due to it being very dense and difficult to work, but reappears in the 18th and 19th Centuries in some houses of distinction in the north of England.
