About the Item

A substantial 19th-century French Louis XVI revival carved oak trumeau composed of two separate elements: a tall overmantel mirror with classical carved motifs and a coordinating mantel base. The scale is impressive and architectural, designed originally to anchor a room and act as both focal point and functional surround. The overmantel features fluted side pilasters, a central carved cartouche with ribbon-tied musical allegory, and a lower mirror framed in oak. The carving is crisp and deep, typical of provincial craftsmen of the period working in dense French oak. The mantel base is equally strong, with repeating carved foliage and geometric detailing across the frieze and fluted legs terminating in simple block feet. The oak throughout has an honest, dry patina—warm, matte, and completely unvarnished—which gives the piece a relaxed, country-house presence despite its height. The two-part construction makes installation far more practical: the mantel sets in place first, then the trumeau rests above, recreating the proportions of an 18th–19th century architectural interior. This is a statement piece intended for large rooms, tall ceilings, and interiors that benefit from strong vertical lines: a foyer, library, dining room, or even a retail or hospitality setting aiming for authentic French character. The mantel is 57"W x 18"D x 44"H The crown is 60"W x 5"D
