About the Item

An exceptional 19th century French Louis XV–style fireplace mantle, exquisitely crafted in richly veined white and honey onyx and adorned with superb dore bronze (ormolu) mounts. This highly decorative architectural piece showcases the opulence and refinement of the period, with sculptural garlands, wreaths, floral swags, and classical medallions all executed in crisp fire-gilded bronze. The serpentine form of the mantle, with its elegant curves and carved details, reflects the exuberance of the Louis XV aesthetic. Fluted pilasters with ormolu appliqués flank the opening, while the frieze features a central bronze medallion depicting neoclassical figures framed by laurel swags. The mantle retains its original bronze summer covers, finely pierced and decorated with ribboned wreaths and garlands—rare survivors that complete the ensemble.
