About the Item

A small 19th century Victorian cast iron fire grate, with a pair of scrolled based griffins hosting the 'Swans Nest' shaped fire grate. The significance of the mythological Griffin creature stems from Greek Mythology-the beast being half lion, half eagle, signifying strength and vision, the strength of the lion and the vision of the soaring eagle. These creatures were often found guarding tombs or important properties or mounted on gate piers to ward of any form of evil......  English, circa 1890.
