About the Item
Belle Époque Bronze and Breccia Marble Fireplace Surround, France, Late 19th / Early 20th Century
Magnificent gilt bronze and breccia marble fireplace surround from the Belle Époque period, exquisitely detailed with neoclassical ornament and sculptural relief. The surround features a central female mask framed by scrolling acanthus and ribbon motifs, flanked by caryatid staffs rising from urns and surmounted by helmets. The frieze is richly adorned with classical figures, lion masks, swans, and floral garlands in deep relief, set within a stop-fluted and rosette-bordered frame. Pierced foliate scroll spandrels accent the inner corners, balancing strength and grace in equal measure.
Dimensions:
42.5 in. high × 50.5 in. wide × 2.5 in. deep
Condition:
Good/Fair; oxidation and patination to bronze elements, scattered minor wear and surface variations to marble consistent with age and use. Structurally sound and displays beautifully with strong color contrast between the gilt bronze and richly veined breccia marble.
Provenance:
From the Iris Apfel Collection, the personal holdings of the famed style icon and interior visionary (1921–2024). Apfel’s love of French design and maximalist layers of texture and color made her interiors a study in exuberant elegance. This fireplace surround exemplifies her attraction to historic architectural elements—opulent, romantic, and undeniably theatrical—used as statement pieces in her distinctive homes. Retains Old World Weavers tag verso, referencing Apfel’s long association with the storied textile and design house she co-founded in 1950.
Attribution:
Likely French or Parisian atelier, late 19th century, in the manner of Barbedienne or Gagneau, leading bronziers known for their collaboration with marbleworkers and architects during the Belle Époque. Comparable examples appear in Parisian hôtels particuliers and fine maisons de maître of the era, often produced for export to grand New York and London interiors.
