About the Item
This 19th century Spanish brazier, or "brasero," is made of brass and wood, and was used to heat areas of a home (or castle) by holding burning coals in its concave bowl. The domed cover protected the embers while allowing the heat to emanate through its perforations. This example is complete with a paddle-like "badila" or "rasera," the tool used to tend the hot coals. Braziers of various designs have been used for thousands of years, in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. In Spain, braziers were one of the primary methods of heating homes until the early 20th century. Though burning coals in the living room may not be the most current of technologies, this brazier can add some exotic charm to a sitting area, salon or library, possibly making use as a planter - or hidden champagne bucket? .

Copper containers of varying shapes and sizes have been used in Spanish homes and kitchens for many centuries. Copper and its alloys were particularly popular metals for storing and preparing foodstuffs, not only because they were they durable, but because these metals exhibited natural antibacterial properties.
