About the Item
Fabulous terracotta mantel piece or fire surround, inscribed PIUS IX on the left hand side and MDCCLX (1760) on the right. The top section of the mantelpiece carved with two angels holding the papal crest of Pius IX, surmounted by dentil moulding.
Vertical base pieces carved with large acanthus scrolls and rosettes.
We believe this to be a contemporary mantelpiece carved in the ancient Roman style.
The mantelpiece comes in three sections, with the top simply resting on the two vertical pieces of the base.
Highly unusual and unique.
