About the Item

A grand and imposing Victorian fireplace in dramatic portoro marble, with rare and beautiful Cornish serpentine columns. The fireplace's inverted breakfront shelf looms over an undershelf studded with crisplycarved Cornish serpentine dentils. Under this, the central keystone, ionic capitals and bases are highlighted in dramatic Belgian black marble. The double full columns stand out in serpentine against the bold gold veining of the portoro. The columns are mounted on generous footblocks and frame the arched opening. English, c.1860.
