About the Item

Rare carved wood paneling with a fleur-de-lis latticework featuring a mascaron depicting a chubby child's head and a humanized moon from the era of King Louis XIV (between 1650 and 1700). It will transform your bedroom into the stately chamber of the greatest king of France. The carving is remarkable throughout the height of this paneling. With a very rectilinear and somewhat massive structure, this rare paneling still exhibits a strong influence from the "Haute époque" and Louis XIII styles. The highly structured moldings of its bas-relief carved paneling highlight the remarkable work of this fleur-de-lis latticework, which gives this paneling its decorative richness, magnifying the head of the young man in the mascaron (Louis XIV not yet the "Sun King"?) and the humanized moon symbolizing the light of the night. This paneling must have been part of a complete paneling, certainly for a bedroom given its dimensions, in a stately home in the French provinces. The entire woodwork structure is period, as you can see on the back of the trumeau. However, the mirror likely replaced a painting around the 1700s, and the mirror is later. This woodwork should be considered as part of an overall project (see the photomontage in the photo gallery) in a historic home before restoring its patina, which is in good condition. The sale price includes delivery within continental Europe. For other destinations, please contact us for a delivery quote. Depending on your project to restore the historical character of your home, we can put you in touch with our cabinetmaking partner to plan the retrofitting of this woodwork into your project. His father, Jean-Marie Buland (1825-1895), was an engraver and his brother, Jean-Eugène (1852-1926), was a painter. Jean-Emile Buland studied under the painter Alexandre Cabanel and the engraver Louis-Pierre Henriquel-Dupont. He won the 1st Grand Prix de Rome for engraving in 1880. He received a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition and a first-class medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1901. Antoine Calbet, born August 16, 1860 in Engayrac (Lot-et-Garonne) and died August 21, 1942 in Paris, was a French painter, watercolorist, draftsman, engraver, and illustrator. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier by Édouard-Antoine Marsal (1845-1929), where he learned drawing, this draftsman and illustrator, a painter of nudes and romantic scenes, was sought after during his lifetime. He was then admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889). He was a member of the Fine Arts admissions jury from 1913 to 1930. He began exhibiting in 1880 and became a member of the Society of French Artists. He was a friend of French President Armand Fallières. He received several medals at the Salon des Artistes Français and a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition for his work on a panel for the pavilion of the Ministry of Colonies. The French Society of Friends of the Arts was founded in 1885 at the Palais de l'Industrie for the development of the arts, supported by numerous distinguished subscribers: Messrs. Gaston Doumergue (President of the French Republic), Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Count Greffulhe, the brothers Alfred, Jules and Léon Bernheim, Louis Boucheron, Edgar Brandt, Emile Buland, Paul Chabas, Viscount Guy de Dampierre, Colonel Francis E. Drake, André Fallières, Louis Lévy, Paul Louchet, Maurice Moisset, Louis Montagné...
