About the Item

This Louis XV period fireplace was made from Calacatta marble. Its lintel is decorated with an asymmetrical shell, typical of the Louis XV period . The central shell is surrounded by acanthus leaves and flowers, including jasmine. The use of the latter reminds us of the portrait of the Marquise de Pompadour as a jardiniere (Carle Van Loo, circa 1750-1757, Versailles) in which the king's favourite holds a sprig of jasmine in her hand. This fireplace is straighter and more sober in its structure than most examples from the Louis XV period. The curves, so dear to the rocaille style, are nevertheless present in the scroll decorations and in the internal line of the lintel. On the edges of the lintel, framed by these scrolls, are visible small flowers in a geometric decoration that are reminiscent of the Guède, the flower of Amiens depicted on the city's cathedral. Finally, on the jambs, we again find the decorations of acanthus leaves and shells supporting a garland of flowers.
