About the Item

Old fireplace, mantle carved in solid red Verona marble, carved with wavy legs and column groove, and lion's paw on the foot, built in the early 1900s for a palace in northern Italy (freely inspired by ancient fireplaces of the Italian Renaissance, but built posthumously). Imposing and massive, it gives the idea of a historic place and an important interior, large dimensions, it is suitable both for interiors such as kitchens or living rooms, but also for exteriors such as patios or winter gardens. Maximum measurement w 215 x h 164 x d 63 cm, internal mouth measurement w 167 x h 122 cm.

The serpentine shaped frieze has incredibly fine carvings of fabulous Renaissance ornament. The centre cartouche is upheld by male figures terminating in scrolling acanthus leaf’s, these flanked by dragons amongst foliage and female figures on each of the curved corners. The frieze upheld by highly carved baluster shaped pedestals on Rosso Verona jambs. Made from Pietra d’Istria marble and Rosso Verona marble. Photographed in un-restored original condition, can be cleaned if preferred, circa 1830 Provenance: Talygarn house in Wales, rebuilt during the 19th century by George Thomas Clarke, industrialist, ironmaster for Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
