About the Item

This magnificent 19th-century Parisian Pompadour fireplace surround is crafted from the extremely rare and historically revered Portor des Pyrénées marble — quarried in Troubat, in the Haute-Pyrénées of France. Extraction of this stone began in Antiquity, and its prestige is reflected in its use for the Grand Altar of the Troubat Church. Belonging to the Bréche family, Portor des Pyrénées is characterised by a deep black dominant base, enriched with dramatic gold, ochre and orange-yellow veining, punctuated by delicate white calcite traces. This combination creates a rich, warm, almost glowing texture that comes alive under shifting natural and artificial light. The fireplace visually warms the room even before a fire is lit. The classic Pompadour profile — with its elegant curves, sculpted mouldings and soft French lines — enhances the dynamic structure of the marble. The polished surface mirrors ambient light, allowing the gold veins to shimmer and adding depth, refinement and a luxurious atmosphere to any interior. A rare antique of this calibre pairs beautifully with: • Contemporary and modern art, creating a high-impact focal point • Minimalist or design-forward spaces, where the marble becomes a statement piece • Warm, cosy, timeless French-inspired interiors • Boutique hotels, curated residences and historic homes This is not just a chimney piece — it is an authentic architectural element that carries over 2,000 years of history within the stone itself. Condition: Wear consistent with age and use. Carefully restored, reconditioned and ready for installation. A museum-quality French mantel that will anchor any interior with heritage, elegance and rarity.
