About the Item

A masculine 19th Century Victorian Scottish Slate fireplace surround. A deep unadorned top shelf with rounded corners sits above a plain frieze. This is flanked in turn by a pair of wide sturdy jambs (legs) with block and capping intersections to the frieze line. The returns are generously deeper than normal- giving this classic piece presence, the whole resting on splayed foot blocks. This design was first introduced around 1770 in Scotland, and remained popular right through the Georgian period, well into the Victorian era. . Its simplicity, coupled with a stand alone bold look, along with the frieze sitting behind the capitols, this gave the option of increasing or decreasing the opening width to allow for different interiors The fire opening sizes on our piece is: 992mm high x 1055mm wide as shown in the main photo . Overall base size as shown : 1530mm. Each leg width: 222mm The opening can be adjusted to suit. This piece has been black enamelled on top of the slate, this was standard historically on slate fireplaces. Shown with a brass high backed fire grate not included, but available separately. This piece would work equally well in a period or contemporary setting.
