About the Item

These reclaimed encaustic tiles by W. Godwin of Lugwardine are presented as a set of twenty-five in a repeating foliate design. Dating from the mid 19th century, these reclaimed encaustic tiles are by W. Godwin of Lugwardine, Herefordshire. They are of a neo-medieval style, made in buff and red terracotta colours, and detailed with a geometric semi-floral pattern and complimentary repeating edge. Godwin Tiles Though William Godwin began manufacturing quarry tiles, bricks and drainpipes at his factory in Lugwardine, Herefordshire in 1851, it wasn’t until 1852 that the firm began making encaustic floor tiles. Based on medieval prototypes, the tiles proved extremely popular and the business opened a second factory at Withington in 1863. In later years, William went into partnership with his son and traded as ‘Godwin Co’, a name that would become reputable until long after William’s death in 1925.
