Curved Cast Stone Garden Bench from Northern France

About the Item

Consisting of 13 pieces of cast stone, this garden bench from Northern France has motifs of the Neoclassical style. Each of the light gray colored stones was cast using a separate mold, with elements that invoke the classic “Italian style”. The seat back is comprised of three pieces of stone that depict a sprawling foliate and floral display along the top rail. In the center is a scrolled heraldic element with a wedge-shaped escutcheon. The base of the coat of arms is formed by opposing foliate rinceaux that run laterally along the top of the back, before transitioning into a volute leaf and fruited margent on each side. Beneath the expansive vegetation is a central medallion of a man riding a lion, inset in an open ring. At the top and the bottom of the loop are two layers of molding that extend horizontally and continue on the two stone pieces flanking the cartouche. Three pieces of stone make up the semi-circular seat, each with a quarter round edge. The two outer stones are capped by an exquisite arm, formed by a floral bouquet emanating from the mouth of a lion mascaron. Both arms terminate below in lion paw feet beneath curled leaves. There are two more feet located more medially, also with paw feet beneath foliage (but without the curled tip). A perfect addition to any garden setting, our curved cast stone bench can accommodate 3-5 adults comfortably. The bench could also be used in an interior courtyard or atrium.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Good condition with light discoloration in some areas. Fleabites, which is a result of the casting process. There is a slight channel on the edge of one of the stones that comprise the seat, also a byproduct of the casting process.
