About the Item

Being offered is a hard to find set of three cast iron ornamental garden pigeons; made in Japan, circa 1955. They are well cast, with great overall detail especially, to the feathers and feet of the birds. Substantial size and weight makes them suitable for garden statuary and outdoor ornamentation; e.g. a bird bath accessory or for the top of a wall decor. In addition, they are fine enough and suitable to utilize as an interior decoration. One of the birds is upright, taking in the scenery, while a second one is scouring the ground for food, while the third pigeon is scratching his back with his face into his feathers. Often times one bird is found; less often you can find a pair; but to find a set of three of these pigeons is highly unusual. The condition of all three of these birds is completely original with no breaks or restoration of any kind, with a wonderful patina to the original black hand painted surface. The original "Japan" paper label with Mt. Fuji outlined in blue still remains on the underneath of one of the birds. Dimensions: upright pigeon = 7 1/2" long x 4 1/4" wide x 6 1/2" high "head down" pigeon = 8" long x 3 3/4" wide x 4 3/8" high "back scratching" pigeon = 6 1/2" long x 5 1/2" wide x 5 3/4" high Note: I am a second generation antiques dealer and have been in business, buying, selling, and collecting, for 50 years; I am also a member of several prestigious antique associations. Thus, I am well qualified to inspect and evaluate the products I offer for sale and I guarantee this to be authentic and as I have described.

Mechanical Bank "Pelican, " Made of Cast Iron, circa 1878
By John Gerrard
Located in Incline Village, NV
The Pelican Mechanical Bank is made of cast iron and was manufactured by The J. & E. Steven's Manufacturing Company, in Cromwell, Connecticut in 1878. It was, however, created by John Gerard of the Trenton Lock & Hardware Company in Trenton, New Jersey. This is probably the best example I've had for sale and is in excellent all original condition and paint. Often times the top beak of the pelican is replaced or repaired this example has the original beak. There were several variations made of the figure in the pelican's mouth. This is the "mammy" example. The bank was finished in both a gold and a dark...
