From our recent Japanese acquisitions A huge travelers and children's stone guardian, 25 inches tall Good garden and collector choice A subtly joyful expression describes this fine early Japanese Buddhist stone traveler’s and children's guardian sculpture, Jizo Bosatsu. He stands 25 inches tall and invokes the "mudra of compassion." His crown still features a faint image of buddha and prolific inscriptions dominate the top and both sides of this remarkable work of art. His frontal robe possesses extensive inscriptions which reveal his temple donors affiliation-all carved a top a lotus base. His lotus base symbolizes "purity and enlightenment" depicting the revered lotus flower which Japanese appreciate for its ability to rise from murky waters to bloom into a beautiful pure flower symbolizing the highest spiritual goal: attaining enlightenment. Sculpted from a gray-hued sedimentary stone. Jizo Bosatsu is one of the most beloved of all Japanese divinities. Jizo in addition to being a protector of children and travelers pleasures in his mudra of compassion -easing suffering and answering prayers of the living for health and success and all manner of mankinds mundane petitions. This Jizo is a rare large over sized and attractive centuries old garden sculpture with original smooth surfaces- all handsomely weathered from great age.
