Rare Set of Four 18th Century Yorkstone Urns on Plinths with Provenance

About the Item

This amazing and stately set of four hand-carved campana-form urns with quarter-lobed bellies and plain everted rims on their original tiered plinths dates to the second half of the 18th Century. They originally decorated one of the Duke of Marlborough's gardens at Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire (a listed National Trust property) and this set deserves to go to an outstanding, if not historic, garden. We will, however, split the set into two pairs, priced at $35,000 per pair. Overall, good condition commensurate with age. Minor losses to plinths, feet corners and a few old larger rim losses. We commissioned what is known as a sympathetic restoration to three of the four urns and plinths in England by a master stone mason. This included cutting two new blocks of Yorkstone for two bottom bases. The new pieces have since weathered to a uniform greenish-taupe color with moss and it is difficult to tell where the restoration was done. Please note that these urns have smallish planting wells, as urns of this stature would not have been planted in the 18th century. However, the wells are still sufficiently large to accept baskets of hanging flowers from a nursery. The wells could be enlarged if so desired, as the urns are extremely thick-walled. Please note that these may remain outside and uncovered in harsh climates year-round, as they have over-wintered in Connecticut for several years with no damage at all. We do recommend you empty the planting wells of dirt and cover them with pieces of wood cut to fit the openings. Please note that due to the size and weight of these urns, a forklift may be required to prepare them for shipping. If so, there will be an additional charge of $700 for forklift rental, regardless of whether you buy one or two pairs. Please call us for additional details.
