Absolutely extraordinary, and charming midcentury French garden chair / scultped figure. Cast in cement and shaped with a seat, in the lovely form of a shell resting on a plinth of 3 sphinx. The garden chair originates from an upscale landscape garden that has been connected to a smaller southern French chateau and has fantastic weathered patina. Here one could sit and philosophize about life in beautiful surroundings.
The chair has strong references to Greek antiquity and in Greek mythology, the Sphinx was a creature with a woman’s head and breasts, lion body and eagle wings, who was sent out to punish the people of Thebes who had displeased the gods.
