About the Item

The cylindrical body displays a rich decorative program in high relief, featuring vegetal motifs, amphorae, and four distinct mascarons: a young woman, an elderly man, a leonine head, and a grotesque simian face, each expressing a vivid physiognomic variation. Garlands cascade between them, terminating in ornamental vases, reinforcing the symmetrical rhythm of the design. The wellhead rests on an octagonal base composed of two segments for ease of transport and installation. Above rises a wrought iron pulley structure—likely a posterior addition—composed of elegantly curved supports converging at a central finial, from which a bucket still hangs. The detailing of the pulley showcases fine blacksmithing, striking a balance between functionality and formal elegance. Venetian wellheads of this period served both practical and decorative purposes, often occupying prominent positions in palaces, courtyards, and public spaces like squares as symbols of civic pride and sculptural sophistication.
