Rare Large Scale Pastoral Plaster Sculpture from Loriol-du-Comtat, France, 1914
Located in Dallas, TX
Found in a chateau in Loriol du Comtat, in the Provence region of France, this large-scale plaster sculpture is signed and dated by the artist, making it a rare find. Originally part of a boiserie containing a fireplace, the sculpture decorated the main hall of the chateau. The artist, Marius Sain, created the piece for the owners of the chateau in 1914. The lovely depiction of a shepherdess and her flock is a fitting subject for an area of France in which shepherding is such an important part of the culture. The preserved heritage of transhumance in Provence goes back at least 800 years, as evidenced by collections of ancient songs, stories, and art. Life-size in scale, the lovely sculpture features a mix of high-, mid-, and low-relief embellishments. A hooded shepherdess tends to her flock of sheep with a crook in hand. A dog sits calmly at her feet as the flock gathers in front of them. Both the shepherdess and the dog are in high relief, as is the lead sheep. The lamb seen suckling from the front sheep was crafted in mid relief, as is the visible head on the far right of the sculpture. There are a few sheep behind them in low relief. Large trees can be seen on either side of the group, while off in the background (faintly visible) are a castle with four fastigiate Mediterranean cypress trees (known as Stricta) and a spired church. The attention to detail is magnificent, with textured surfaces including the animals’ fur and the uneven ground. Block print on the plaster can be seen at the base. The letters read Le Soir, which is French for “The Night”. The right side of the sculpture has been signed “M Sain 1914”. Marius Joseph Sain was born in 1877 in Avignon, France. In 1902, Sain moved to Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Through introductions by his older brother and painter, Paul...

Pair of French 19th Century Lifesize Cast-Iron Sculpture Torcheres, Val d Osne
By Val D Osne Foundry
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A superb quality and palatial pair of French 19th century lifesize cast-iron sculptures - torcheres of Native American Indians titled "L’ Indienne" designed by Jules Salmson (French, 1823-1902) and Cast by Le Fonderies d'Art du Val d'Osne, each standing figure representing a Native American Indian male and a female scantily dressed in their native robes, one arm raised holding a light-torch with an opaline glass globe, both wearing earrings, seashell necklaces and arm-braces, raised on cylindrical cast-iron stand. Signed/cast on each pedestal: “VAL D’OSNE”. (Electrified). Paris, circa 1870-1880. Overall hHeight: 127 inches (322.6 cm) Pedestal height: 39 inches (99.1 cm) Indian man's width: 22 inches (55.9 cm) Indian man's depth: 26 3/4 inches (68 cm) Indian woman's width: 28 inches (71.1 cm) Indian woman's depth: 25 inches (63.5 cm) These fantastic and impressive pair of cast-iron sculptures, most likely representing Hiawatha and Minnehaha, were probably comissioned to Le Fonderies d'Art du Val d'Osne for export to the America's to decorate governmental buildings and parks which makes these pair a rare find and now available for a private collection. Iron sculptures were preferred over bronze for outdoor park and building decorations for their long lasting resistance to all types of weather conditions. An identical pair of sculptures, also by Val d' Osne, are currently exhibited at the National Garden of Congress in Santiago, Chile. View Pages No. 87, 88, 89. Another identical pair are also currently exhibited at The Musée de la Ville - Indian Museum "O Indio do Museo da Cidade" in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Another identical pair decorate the front of the Ópera Teatro Amazonas, Manaús, Brazil. A single figure of the female Indian...

Large Fleur de Pêche Marble and Ormolu Antique Fireplace
Located in London, GB
Large Fleur de Pêche marble and ormolu antique fireplace French, 19th Century Height 121cm, width 188cm, depth 63cm This stunning fireplace combines unusual Fleur de Pêche marble with sculptural ormolu mounts. The fireplace consists of a panelled frieze, below which is the wide serpentine opening. The twin jambs are canted in form, and are supported by footblocks. The use of the historic Fleur de Pêche marble is particularly pleasing: featuring deep veining in a palette of cream, purple, and brown, the marble was highly popular for opulent 19th century design, adorning elite interiors such as the main hall of the Napoleon III apartments in the Louvre. The fireplace is adorned with several ormolu mounts. A large Rococo scallop shell form decorates the centre of the marble frieze, trailed by acanthus leaves. The upper sections of the jambs are applied with female terms, whose bodies dissolve into further acanthus-style forms. The bottom sections also feature gilt-bronze decoration, with further scallop shell designs. The fireplace also features a cast-iron inset, decorated with geometric designs. The fireplace clearly takes inspiration from the Rococo-style fireplace in the Council Cabinet in the King’s Apartments at Versaille, which was designed in the late 18th century by Jacques Verberckt and Jacques Caffiéri. Whilst the deep red marble of the Versailles fireplace...
