Pair of Carved French Regence Style Pedestals

About the Item

This pair of wooden pedestals has been highly carved and shaped in the style of French Regence. At some point in their history, the wood was stripped, revealing a beautiful natural color and allowing the ornate carvings to be showcased. The pedestals have sinuous entablatures with stepped cavetto molding and are 22 inches at the widest point. After curving inwards from the corners, the middle of each side bows outwards (the technique is often called galbe). This elegant shape remains throughout each pedestal, from the entablature to the base. Beneath the molding of the entablature, each corner has a large foliate espagnolette that has been carved in mid-relief. The sides of the columns have horizontally orientated rinceaux with central florets carved into recessed rectangular panels. Beneath these are recessed rectangular panels with arched tops. The area just outside the arch has been adorned with a series of C-scrolls. On the outside of the bottom of each arched panel is a large, curled leaf with volute bottoms. Each pedestal has a stepped base with quarter-round molding. The corners (which align directly with the volute leaf curls above) have a foliate cartouche embellished with husks and undulating borders. All the carvings echo the overall sentiment of the pedestals, as the curves give grace and elegance to an item known for strength. These French wood pedestals are perfect for displaying statues, sculptures, urns or plants. The warm, neutral color of the lightly waxed wood make these quite versatile and adaptable with almost any color. At almost 32 inches tall, they could also be repurposed as bases for a console table, and they would make ideal night tables.
