Antique French 15" Marquetry Inlaid Jardiniere Planter, VERVELLE

Absolutely gorgeous rare antique French Napoleon III era 14 3/4" jardiniere or plant box, a beautiful marquetry inlaid piece with burled amboyna kingwood veneers, gilt ormolu feet accenting and VERVELLE maker marks! There are only a handful of names that ring out when speaking of fine old Napoleon III French ebanistas, box or cabinet makers and Vervelle is definitely one of them. Tahan, Giroux, Sormani...they all bring to mind the finest of the fine and this piece is surely an exquisite representation of those works. Kingwood veneers frame all sides, a marquetry band of what appears to be ebony, kingwood and likely lemon wood surrounds the large center panels of richly burled amboyna veneers. Gilt ormolu legs, side handles and bands on both the top and bottom of the box, in addition to the reticulated rims of the jardiniere top! Stunning! All in as near pristine condition as one could hope for, just missing the inner tin liner. The bottom of the box has a brass or bronze label that reads "Mon Vervelle - Audot, (illegible), Paris". One you'd expect to see on display in the Napoleon III apartments in the Louvre, a treasure....don't miss it!

Very good-excellent condition! The only spots of veneer loss are to the ebony upper rim, just outside the reticulated ormolu (and only on one or two corner sections). The rest of the piece is superb with no veneer loss or restorations. There is an age or drying split in the bottom of the piece and, as mentioned, it is missing what would surely have been a tin or zinc lining. The ormolu does have some aged patina, we just briefly went over it with polish to bring out the gilding. See pictures for measurements.
