About the Item
A clean-lined interpretation of an ancient form, this footed basin was hand carved by artisans in China's Shandong province. The mesmerizing pattern of zhenzhu is inherent to the stone, a conglomerate limestone extracted from Lake Tai in Jiangsu province. Speckled with almost painterly daubs of color, the sought-after stone was especially prized by scholars of the 16th through 18th centuries, earning a favored place at the calligraphy table among ink, brush, and inkstone. We suggest a place of prominence on a table or credenza for this exceptional vessel that’s as fascinating to look at as it is tempting to touch.
