About the Item

Overview: Large and substantial Japanese Arita blue and white porcelain hibachi, circa 1950's, possibly by Fukagawa Seiji. Finely painted with landscape and geometric roundels accented in gilt and iron-red, with raised ribbon motifs. Originally a charcoal brazier, now ideal as a planter or centerpiece. From the Laura Pels Collection, River House, NYC. More Details: A fine and large Japanese Arita porcelain hibachi or jardinière, hand-painted in underglaze blue with alternating landscape and geometric roundels, enriched with iron-red and gilt details. The design features idyllic riverside and mountain scenes framed by stylized scrollwork, key-fret borders, and auspicious symbols, all executed with precision characteristic of mid-century Arita production. Raised and incised gilt ribbons and botanical motifs add subtle textural relief and refinement. Originally created as a hibachi — a household brazier used for holding charcoal and providing gentle heat — this substantial vessel now serves beautifully as a planter, centerpiece, or decorative accent in modern interiors. The Arita kilns of Japan’s Saga Prefecture have produced fine porcelain since the early 17th century. By the Shōwa period, leading houses such as Fukagawa Seiji and Koransha reinterpreted traditional blue-and-white designs for Western collectors, combining classical motifs with mid-century restraint. The delicate cobalt landscapes and gilt flourishes on this example reflect the refined aesthetic of Fukagawa’s mid-century studio output. Dimensions: 13 in. H × 17.5 in. Dia. Condition: Good; minor surface wear, light firing irregularities, and expected glaze variations consistent with age and use. Provenance: Furniture and Decorative Arts from the Laura Pels Collection, River House, New York City.

Large Antique Japanese Meiji Period Bronze Floor Vase with Foo Dog Handles
Located in Morristown, NJ
Late 19th/Early 20th c., large Japanese Meiji bronze floor urn. The principal decoration on both sides of the vase is rendered in beautiful and strong relief. One side depicts birds, possibly skylarks, in flight and on flowering cherry blossom branches. The opposite side depicts herons wading and alighting on a flowering tree. the upper and lower portions of urn are decorated with repeating arched lozenges detailed with scrolls and flora. The urn is adorned with foo dog handles, unmarked. This is an impressive and beautiful bronze urn. In bronze-working, Meiji period craftsmen were newly empowered to attempt distinctive, innovative, and complex pieces. Makers were influenced less by the West than by China, which had had a relationship with Japan stretching back thousands of years, far further than Japan’s recent association with Western powers. Artistry in bronze-work reached new heights in the Meiji period, as a number of metalworking schools developed, creating intricate pieces including vases, sculptures...
