About the Item

Olof Hult (1892–1962) “Mikrokosmos” planter, cast iron Näfveqvarns Bruk, Sweden, circa 1922 Ø: 38 cm, H: 16 cm A rare and highly sculptural cast iron planter titled “Mikrokosmos”, designed by Swedish architect Olof Hult (1892–1962) for the renowned foundry Näfveqvarns Bruk, circa 1922. Executed in solid cast iron, the piece displays a magnificent naturally aged surface, where the subtle interplay of oxidation and rust forms a rich, earthy patina — a testament to both the material’s integrity and the passage of time. The tactile quality of the surface enhances the planter’s sculptural depth, transforming it into something far beyond a utilitarian object. The decoration, cast in relief, features cosmic and organic motifs — stars, planets, constellations, and stylized flora — symbolizing the unity between nature and the universe. Hult’s design perfectly embodies the refined sculptural language of Swedish Grace, a movement that bridged classical harmony and early modernism in 1920s Sweden. Its restrained monumentality and sense of rhythm connect it to the broader ideals of the Nordic Art Deco and National Romantic idioms. Näfveqvarn was among Sweden’s foremost artistic foundries, collaborating with leading designers and architects including Carl Milles, Ivar Johnsson, and Olof Hult himself. The Mikrokosmos model stands among its most celebrated sculptural works and was exhibited at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris — the exhibition that gave the Art Deco style its name. A deeply evocative object that bridges architecture, sculpture, and design — equally at home in a garden, entryway, or refined interior — this example presents beautifully with authentic patination and traces of age that reveal its near-century-old history.
