About the Item
"Garden Grandeur": Pair of American Cast Iron "Vase Chambord" Urns on Pedestals,
Mid-20th Century
A stately pair of American cast iron garden urns raised on matching pedestals, dating to the mid-20th century.
These impressive jardinieres are cast in the elaborate "Vase Chambord" style, featuring a broad, lobed body with a scalloped rim and a gadrooned lower section. They are flanked by dramatic, sweeping scroll handles adorned with acanthus leaf terminals, adding a sense of movement and architectural flair to the silhouette.
Each urn rests upon a separate, square columnar pedestal. The bases feature open-work (reticulated) panels with intricate scroll and geometric latticework, providing a lighter, airy counterpoint to the solid weight of the urns above. Finished in a classic bright white paint, they are designed to stand as focal points in a landscape, conservatory, or entryway.
Measurements:
Overall Height: 33 1/2 inches (85.1 cm)
Overall Width: 17 1/2 inches (44.5 cm)
Urn Dimensions: 17 1/2 inches wide x 14 1/2 inches high (Interior Diameter: 12.5 inches)
Pedestal Base Dimensions: 19 3/4 inches high x 8 1/4 inches square
Historical Context:
The "Vase Chambord" is a classic form in garden ornamentation, inspired by the Renaissance grandeur of the Château de Chambord in France. In the 19th and 20th centuries, American foundries (such as J.W. Fiske or Kramer Bros) popularized these designs in durable cast iron, making aristocratic garden styles accessible for American estates and public parks. The addition of the pierced pedestal is a mid-century adaptation that gives the urns significant height and presence without the visual bulk of a solid stone plinth.
