About the Item

William Adair Bernoudy (1910–1988) FAIA was in the inaugural class of Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin Fellowship (1932), an advocate of Wright's modern organic architecture. Bernoudy designed this unique aluminum planter in the 1950s, in limited quantities, based on principals that he learned by the master Frank Lloyd Wright. Signed with embossed text Bernoudy Inc, Saint Louis, on the underside. A rare example of this architects work in the decorative arts. I interviewed Hank Bauer (1922-2018) a partner in the firm Bernoudy, Mutrux Bauer, in the early 2000s and he told me only a few maybe a dozen were made, some were raw aluminum, some painted black. He said they were mainly given to friends of Bernoudy, but were for sale at their Clayton offices along with a candle holder he designed. Also, the firm were early sellers of midcentury designs by Widdicomb, Dunbar, Knoll and Walter Lamb furniture. This planter came from the estate of artist Lee Chubb, a dear friend of Bernoudy. Bernoudy played a vital role in the architecture of St. Louis and the surrounding area, and his work constitutes a significant contribution to the history of modern architecture. See period promo shots of planter and photo of original drawing. Planter has been stripped and painted in flat black, some scuffs to paint, some imperfection to the casting. Great planter for indoor or outside use. Missing copper liner.
