About the Item

Tripod vase holder made of gilt bronze and Sèvres ceramics, based on a model by Pierre Gouthière. Circular base of cobalt blue Sèvres porcelain, with gilded decorations on the top and myrtle leaf wreath on the band; below, three gilded bronze feet with spiral motifs hold the whole. On the top rest the three bronze goat feet with an inverted pine cone in the center; the tripod is contained by a band ornamented with friezes at the bottom; the uprights end with faun heads characterized by long beards and ram's horns, connected by festoons of vines and bunches of grapes. In the center, descending from above following a spiral trajectory, is the figure of a snake with a body covered in scales and a gaping mouth. On the top it has a second pinecone element, opposed to the first, surmounted by a head of leaves arranged in a radial pattern and the vase-holder plate, the latter embellished with Greek and ending with a pierced railing element with an everted rim. These elements, originally separated by a Sèvres porcelain vase missing here, were superimposed and fixed together at a later date. The base features Sèvres manufacture mark.
