About the Item

Impressive and elegant gilt bronze stair ball, Parisian work circa 1880–1900, stamped “FT” for the renowned Maison Fontaine, one of the finest Parisian bronzework and luxury hardware manufacturers of the Belle Époque. Fontaine supplied prestigious Haussmannian mansions, bourgeois townhouses, and interior architects seeking high-quality decorative fittings. Superb Louis XV Rococo-style decoration, richly cast and finely chiseled, with floral swags, scrolling foliage, and stylized acanthus motifs. The original gilding shows an appealing historic patina, enhancing the authenticity and antique charm of the piece. The top section, shaped like a stylized pinecone, provides elegant vertical emphasis — a classical decorative element widely used during the Second Empire and the early Third Republic. The base is threaded, allowing a direct installation onto a newel post or banister. The casting is heavy and of high craftsmanship, fully representative of Fontaine’s quality production.
