Vintage Saddle Mates Dolphin Spring Rider Playground Toy
By Saddle Mates
Located in Wheat Ridge, CO
Vintage Saddle Mates Playground Dolphin Spring Rider, Mid-20th Century
This Vintage Playground Dolphin Spring Rider, crafted by Saddle Mates, is a charming relic from mid-20th-century playground design. Manufactured by GameTime Inc. of Litchfield, Michigan, these spring riders were popular fixtures in parks and schools during the 1950s and 1960s. The dolphin design adds a playful and nostalgic touch to any collection or outdoor space.
Constructed from durable cast aluminum, these spring riders are designed to withstand the rigors of outdoor play. The material ensures longevity and resistance to rust, making them suitable for both display and functional use. The spring mechanism allows for gentle rocking motion, providing an engaging experience for children.
This Dolphin Spring Rider is not just a playground toy but a piece of Americana, evoking memories of simpler times. Whether you're a collector of vintage playground equipment or someone looking to add a unique piece to your garden or yard, this Saddle Mates Dolphin Spring Rider is a delightful choice.
The dolphin has cheerful detailing, including a red “circus-style” cap and seat. Mounted on a heavy-duty steel spring with a circular base, it retains its original industrial strength construction. The playful design captures the optimism and imagination of mid-century recreational design, making it both nostalgic and sculptural.
Whether displayed indoors as a conversation piece and sculptural accent, incorporated into a children’s play area, or reimagined in a creative garden setting, this vintage spring rider...

James de Wulf Concrete Standing Stone Sculpture
By James de Wulf
Located in Paia, HI
"This was inspired by the French comic Obelix. I wanted to make a standing stone that floats and feels peaceful. After making it, I am reminded of the alien ship in the movie Arrival. I'm very happy with this piece and the way it feels when standing. I look forward to making more standing stones."
The piece is a brutal monolith with a feminine shape; imagined in the likeness of an alien mile marker...

Contemporary Large-Scale Outdoor Kinetic Concrete Sculpture and Installation
By Johnny Poux
Located in kingston, NY
Johnny Poux sculptures
Johnny Poux’s large-scale kinetic concrete sculptures and installations explore the relationship between motion and mass, industry and nature.
Each piece is made individually to order.
Artist statement
My work as an artist has been focused primarily on large-scale kinetic pieces that explore my unyielding fascination with simple machine principles, movement, and the beauty and physics of a large mass in motion. Working with industrial materials like concrete and steel, and occasionally combining these with natural forms or living things like trees, my work is often about the tension between man and nature and our technological footprint. I am drawn to creating large-scale work that moves, evokes feelings of wonder, is interactive, and alters our relationship to the world for a moment.
I have built and installed 30 foot tall steel kinetic pieces that span a full 40’ circle as if in flight and have created 1000 lb. concrete pieces that ripple like water in the historic cement mines of Rosendale, NY. I have balanced and counter weighted a 55’ tall black walnut tree...

Garden sculpture, contemporary. Nordic Sphinx, The Rhubarb Sphinx
By Dana Nicholson
Located in New York, NY
Our Sphinx is Persephone, and she started as an old kingdom Egyptian relic.
I then turned her musculature into mechanical appendages like she was an icon or idol off
the set of the 1927 film, “Metropolis”. She was going to be an AI sphinx but I still wanted
to incorporate Rhubarb within her adornment as she is a Nordic or Maritime sphinx.
Big leafed rhubarb didn’t resonate with the mechanized look I had just executed beautifully.
At the very least she is a North American sphinx with feather and wheat motifs. I
included for symbolism and beauty (of course), ancient Egyptian and Greek floral references
befitting a worldly creature. I took liberties and referenced eighteenth and nineteinth "Orientalism". The Sphinx is a mythological creature and not anything that moved across terrains anywhere that most of us have been.
The AI sphinx was too fascist and severe for most gardens. I liked it deeply and may revisit
that avenue once this sphinx’s’ plaster dust has settled. I love the Baroque, so I decided to go Baroque by giving the lions coat some seriously carved fur and curly cues. She looked like any one of the seventeenth century Louis’ characters crossed with a French poodle. That was a bad notion. I then created a sphinx that I like, a sphinx from my soul but seriously influenced by other artists.
In the end she is uniquely elegant and powerfully poised, with distinct features. Compared to
most sphinx throughout history her breasts are too high on her chest but seductive none the less (she is a contemporary sphinx).
Her head is elongated, much like the busts of the Armana period in Egypt, but that’s just her hair and
headdress, not her skull. Her rump and back are sensual. The Rhubarb Sphinx, embodies
a history of sphinxes created by Europeans after the Napoleonic invasion and the extensive survey
of Egypt which ignited a design frenzy of all things ancient Egypt. She is an esoteric
garden folly...
