An antique French terracotta lion sculpture by Mandeville
Bernier. Dating to circa 1900, this impressive lion sculpture is of good scale, its detailed mane, large paws, and expressive face boldly modelled in a rich terracotta. The deep orange colour with hints of brown only adds to its striking character.
In a seated stance, known in heraldry as sejant, this lion sculpture makes a handsome statue, ornament or sculpture in a garden or interior.
Mandeville
Bernier
Mandeville Pottery based in Castelnaudary (Aude) in the south of France was a famous company of its time. From 1880, the company evolved, using the name ‘Mandeville-Combeleran’ on its works. This was to be followed by ‘Mandeville-Bernier’ in 1905 until the company’s closure in 1935.
