About the Item
This Handed Pair of Ornate Italian Finials After Michelangelo’s Night and Day are carved from a light pink buff terracotta.
Dating to the 19th century, these statues represent night and day, an allegory of the four sections of a day by Michelangelo which also includes Dawn and Dusk represented in similar forms. The original sculptures were carved in marble, situated in Sagrestia Nuova, also known as the New Sacristy and the Medici Chapel.
Day, depicted as a strong male figure, is draped with a flowing cloth. Its detailed face looks onward to the future and resembles a figure in the prime of life.
Night, depicted as a woman with her head facing downwards at the end of her life. She leans on a detailed, bearded mask and has a bird standing between her legs which rest on a bushel of fruit.
Each figure is lay atop a large scroll which pleasingly offset each other as a handed pair. The statues would be equally as impressive on display indoors or atop a covered entry or garden walkway.

The original "Bacchus" is a marble sculpture by the master, Michelangelo, created circa 1496 when the artist was 21. This statue was originally commissioned by Cardinal Raffaele Riario. However, it was rejected by him and eventually found its way to Jacopo Galli, Cardinal Riario’s banker and a friend of the sculptor, who purchased it in 1506. Some 66 years later it was bought for the Medici and transferred to the royal house in Florence, Italy. Currently it can be viewed at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence. It is one of just two sculptures surviving Michelangelo’s initial period in Rome, with the other being Pieta.
