About the Item

Japan, a large 49" tall antique early 20th century elegant cast bronze seated Kanon Maitreya, Guan Yin in a pensive pose. This example is the oldest and largest version of this bronze pensive pose Kannon we have ever seen available. It dates to the Showa period, circa 1920s-1930s. Photographs taken out of doors to depict natural colors. Dimensions: 49 inches tall and 22 inches width. The peaceful and youthful Kanon with sublime down cast eyes and his right leg crossed over his left and fingers of right hand gently touching his cheek in a Classic pensive pose in quietude and seated atop a cylindrical lotus leaf engraved base all exhibiting varigated green and blue colors . The multi colored patina formation on surface areas come from a previous garden installation. Cast in two parts. Provenance: Private collection Kyoto, Japan Only one. Maitreya is a bodhisattva who in the Buddhist tradition is to appear on Earth, achieve enlightenment and who will be the successor to the historic Sakymuni Buddha. This combination of posture and pose “pensive pose” is a trans-eastern iconography popular and originating from ancient China and Korea, 6th-7th centuries. Kanon is a Japanese name for Guanyin, an East Asian bodhisattva and spiritual figure associated with mercy and compassion. Life time guarantee of authenticity.
