Japanese antique small rice field god / Edo period / Jizo Bodhisattva stone stat

About the Item

This is an old Japanese stone figurine in the shape of Jizo Bodhisattva. In Japan, there is a concept of Shinbutsu Shugo, which is the idea of merging gods and Buddhas. This statue is probably a representation of the rice field god. Rice field gods began to be carved around the Edo period in hopes of a good harvest. In the mid-Edo period, around the 1700s, small ones also began to be carved, and many of them were carved by farmers using simple carving techniques. The rice field gods come in a variety of shapes, but what they all have in common is that they often wear a triangular umbrella on their head and hold a rice scoop, straw, or gourd in their hands. (Also, a similar item was featured in an art book, so I've included a photo of it as a reference.) Some of them are carved in the style of a Buddha statue. Due to these conditions, although this statue has the form of a Jizo Bodhisattva Buddhist statue, it holds two rice scoop-like objects in its hands. For this reason, it is thought to be the god of rice fields. The simple, cute carving seems to express the farmers' honest desire for a good harvest in their rice fields.
