Large Late 18th or Early 19th Carved Limestone Statue Fragment

About the Item

This very large fragment carved in limestone is the lower section of a statue of Pan. The figure would have stood well over life-size. The standing figure's calf and goat feet resting on a tree stump and rocky outcrop are all that remain. Intended to be seen in the full round the rocky outcrop shows carving back and front. This tree stump and rock would have been used as a counter-balance for the figure's support in carved stone allowing for a fully realized and dynamic upper body. This piece, now only a small remainder of the whole, is sensitively carved especially in the cloven hooves and the placement of the calf. Even details like the shaggy leg fur ( see figure 5) are fully represented. Most likely carved in France this piece has had a number of visible repairs over its lifetime attesting to its importance in a classically inspired garden setting. The figure is not taken directly from an antique Greek or Roman statue but is most likely a neo-classically inspired version of Pan. By repute once part of the garden park setting at Kykuit. and removed early in its placement due to weather and damage.
