Pair of Life-Size Patinated Bronze Garden Swans, France, 20th Century (Pre-WWII)
A monumental and finely detailed pair of life-size patinated bronze swans, French, early 20th century, pre-WWII. Each swan is superbly cast with naturalistic precision, featuring layered wing feathers, textured necks, and webbed feet. The quality of the modeling and the depth of the surfaces speak to the finest French foundry work of the period.
The pair is presented in complementary postures: one swan with its long neck arched upward in an elegant stretch, measuring 37 inches high, and the other with its head gracefully inclined, standing 30 inches high. Together they create a balanced composition that suggests both serenity and motion, making them ideal for flanking a garden path, pond, or fountain. Their poses also allow them to be placed independently, where each can serve as a commanding sculptural presence.
The bronzes have developed a richly weathered surface over decades of outdoor exposure, showing a dark brown patina with areas of green verdigris. This natural aging enhances their authenticity and charm, aligning them with historic examples found in the great gardens of Europe. Bronze swans and waterfowl were frequently commissioned for estates and formal gardens in the early 20th century, echoing installations at Versailles, Schönbrunn, Kew, and other important sites.
