About the Item

Rare Cast-Iron Torchère – Barbezat / Val d’Osne Foundry, France, circa 1880 After designs by Mathurin Moreau Elegant cast-iron torchère produced around 1880 by the renowned Barbezat Cie – Val d’Osne foundry, bearing its original foundry stamp on the base. This beautiful model, documented in the period catalogue of the Val d’Osne foundry (see picture attached), is inspired by the designs of Mathurin Moreau and depicts a young classical maiden draped in antique-style garments, holding an ornate urn. The sculpture stands out for its graceful posture, the finesse of the drapery, and the detailed decoration of the vase. It rests on its original base and is presented on an elegant Bleu Turquin marble pedestal, embellished with a gilt-bronze beaded frieze. Condition: Very good overall condition with a lovely original patina. Note: the left hand is missing several phalanges, though this does not detract from the sculpture’s presence or aesthetic integrity. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor display. Can be electrified on request to function as a dramatic light feature. France, late 19th century. A high-quality decorative piece, representative of the exceptional french craftsmanship of the Val d’Osne art foundry.
