About the Item

A very large and impressive stone plaque featuring 'George and the Dragon.' These Armorial Bearings are carved with the Latin motto of the City "Domine dirige nos", which translates as "Lord, direct us". It appears to have been adopted in the 17th century, as the earliest record of it is in 1633. Subsequently, it is very likely that this plaque is from a building in the City of London and is likely to be 19th century. It is extremely rare to find such a large and impressive piece with such a rich history. NB. Some of surface dirt/moss has been removed since these photos were taken. Condition is generally good and in keeping with age of piece. No previous breaks. Total 8 pieces. Overall Width - 160" / 4060mm Overall Height - 83" / 2108mm
