About the Item

An antique stained glass roundel commemorating the South African overseas expeditionary force (SAOEF) from the early 20th century. This colourful glass was made in honour of the volunteer force that operated from 1915-1919. The South African forces played important roles throughout both world wars, with campaigns in Egypt, France, Germany and Africa. A springbok, the national animal of South Africa is finely painted and surrounded by vivid blue glass. Union is strength is painted around the edge, mirrored below in Dutch.
