About the Item

Antique Chinese Dragon Wedding Basket, bamboo, rattan, wood and brass, 19th century. A 3-tier round form with magnificently carved bamboo overhead handle and engraved brass hardware. The woven containers of equal height with the bottom tier affixed to the bamboo side supports. These uprights have pierced carved stanchions in the designs of opposing phoenixes among peonies and dragons among clouds above. The uprights have relief carving in three raised panels on each side. One side has a panel of orchid, a panel of four of the 8 immortals and a phoenix above. The other upright has a panel of blossoming prunus, a panel with the other four of the eight immortals and a foo dog with a ball above. The pierced and carved brass hardware consists of a cutout panel on each side connecting the stanchions to the uprights, a saddle on the overhead handle, escutcheons and a double headed dragon handle. The lid with woven dragon design in two tones. All motifs are symbolic blessings for the newlywed couple. 13.8 lbs (6.3kg).
