About the Item
Chinese Export Canton Blue
White Chestnut Basket and Stand
Circa 1810-1820
This is a two-piece Chinese Export porcelain set consisting of an oval basket and a matching stand. Both pieces are hand-painted in underglaze blue with the Canton pattern, a common design made for the Western market.
The painted scene shows a river with islands, pagodas, a bridge, and boats. The sides of the basket are pierced with openwork (reticulation) in a lattice pattern, which is repeated on the rim of the stand. A solid blue band and an inner lattice design form the border on both pieces.
Background Information
Canton Ware: This porcelain is known as "Canton" ware because it was exported to the West through the port of Canton (modern Guangzhou). The porcelain was made in Jingdezhen and then decorated in Canton to appeal to European and American buyers. The Canton pattern was the most widely imported blue and white design of its time.
A European Shape: The basket and stand form is not traditionally Chinese; it was made specifically for Western customers. Known as a "chestnut basket," this shape was used in Europe and America to serve fruit, nuts, or sweets. The openwork design was decorative and also allowed air to circulate around the food.
Historical Context: Made around 1810-1820. For wealthy families in America owning Chinese porcelain was a symbol of status and wealth. These imported goods were valued for their durability and foreign origin
