About the Item

Silver Basket Peter Archambo Hallmarked London, 1740 This stunning George II silver basket is a remarkable example of the artistry and craftsmanship of Peter Archambo, a renowned Huguenot silversmith. Archambo, born in England to Huguenot refugees from France, was instrumental in introducing the Rococo style to England. His work is known for its intricate design elements, such as strap work, cut card work and cast and applied ornaments. This basket exemplifies his signature French influence, with its exquisite pierced apron featuring foliate scrolls, Ceres masks and Rococo cartouches. The beautifully engraved coat of arms and inscriptions add historical significance, highlighting the basket’s connection to the Fenwick family. The basket's body is shaped in an elegant oval form, raised on four grotesque mask feet and features pierced sides adorned with scrolls, diaperwork and vine tendrils, all framing female masks. The swing handle, with its female bust terminal, is further enhanced with chased Rococo motifs. The center is engraved with a cartouche displaying the finely detailed coat of arms of Fenwick impaling another, likely Colville, for Robert Fenwick and his wife Jane, daughter of Edward Colville of Whitehouse, widow of Charles Clerk of Newcastle and sister of Camilla, Countess of Tankerville, whom he married in 1739. The underside bears a later inscription reading "Ex Dono Robertus Fenwick Arm February 1759," denoting its gift from Robert Fenwick to a recipient in 1759. 10" high x 14" wide x 13" deep Provenance: The estate of Robert Fenwick, England The estate of Robert Atkinson, England Sale, Christie's, London, 22 July 1953, lot 165 M.S. Chinese Export Silver Bowl and Spoon
Located in New Orleans, LA
This delightful and extremely rare spoon and bowl pair exemplifies the remarkable artistry of Chinese export silver. Chinese silver pieces are renowned for their exceptional quality and unique designs, and the majority are entirely hand crafted. Today, many of these elaborate designs are housed in major museum collections, and remain a rarity on the market. Beginning in the 18th century, silver workshops in China specialized in the manufacture of silver export pieces for Western audiences. Typically bearing motifs that were popular amongst Americans and Europeans such as dragons, bamboo and floral patterns, these charming pieces were all beautifully handcrafted with the utmost skill. Today, important pieces of Chinese export silver such as this one can be found in many of the major museum collections, and are highly valued amongst collectors. The bowl boasts a fluid, undulating rim exquisitely engraved to depict bamboo, a motif which continues throughout the bowls body. Accompanying the bowl is a matching silver spoon, its handle intricately modeled as a vine with floral buds climbing upwards to its bowl, which seems to bloom with lovely applied buds and flowers. The spoon features the mark of Wing Fat, a firm active in Hong Kong from 1875-1930 and Sing Fat...

Louis XV Silver Tureen by Jean-Baptiste-Francois Chéret
By Cheret Francois
Located in New Orleans, LA
Crafted by French master silversmith Jean-Baptiste-François Chéret, this period Louis XV tureen boasts exceptional decoration, including delicate and refined engraving, shell and acanthus accents, and a remarkably detailed cast finial of cauliflower, celery and carrots. Thanks to a very strict guild system, French silver has always been among the finest in the world. It was also subject to the various fiscal crises of the late 17th and 18th centuries, as both Louis XIV and Louis XV issued edicts demanding that all silver be brought to the mint for melting, with the resulting coin to be used to replenish depleted state treasuries. French silver from this extravagant era survives only in relatively small quantities, and is thus in great demand by collectors. The tureen is marked on the interior lid and underside. The large object charge mark identified as a crown over the letter “A...
