About the Item

Vintage Japanese open top woven basket. The basket features a broad bent bamboo handle which is reinforced by angled bamboo stays lashed to the handle at both the bend in the handle and in the center of the handle's flat apex. The rim consists of two 1/2" bamboo splints capturing the bamboo stays, lashed together at periodic intervals. The basket alternates between red dyed bamboo and woven rattan bands. The basket is finished in a red lacquer with two contrasting darker rattan bands. Japan, first half 20th century. Dimensions: 15" L x 9" W x 5-1/2" H (plus 6" tall handle)
